以文艺片见长的罗伯特．本顿意外地执导了这部黑社会动作片，台前幕后的阵容惊人。摄影执导是大师级的拉斯托．阿曼多斯，主演明星包括达斯廷．霍夫曼、 布鲁斯．威利斯、 尼科尔．基德曼等大牌，叫人充满期待，然而影片的实际却有点雷大雨小之感。剧情描述在30年代美国经济大萧条的时候，比利．巴盖一直想在逆境中出人头地，凭机智的脑袋成为黑道枭雄舒滋的左右手，但是江湖的险恶却也让比利经常陷入生死边缘的危机，为了活命还不得不绞尽脑汁。全片的气氛比较文艺腔，也偏向小人物奋斗史，而非帮派血战的格局。
