汤姆是一个子承父业、经营地下房地产生意的28岁年轻男子，他制造鼠害、断水断电，甚至以球棒捣毁屋中设备，打伤陌生人，试图藉此驱赶久占不离的房客或强行搬进的游民。他的心中没有怜悯。汤姆的父亲侯贝遇到困难总是要求儿子出面替他解决，父子的关系似乎倒过来了。某个夜晚，汤姆遇到了他已过世的钢琴家母亲的经纪人，原来汤姆小时候也练过琴，只是在母亲过世之后就停止了。汤姆想要重新练琴，并偶然遇到了一位华人女孩。语言的隔阂使他们几乎无法沟通，他们却因为音乐而交流无阻。汤姆因新练琴而疏忽了地下房地产的工作，父亲与朋友不满意他的做法。汤姆虽然对生活有着另一种向往，但生活的选择往往是他所无法控制的。
