简没有想到，在度过了七年的美洲生活后，还能在外婆贝利太太的召唤下重返故乡埃尔维。更没想到的是，当她重新见到昔日的恋人、表哥辛克莱时，竟然还能感受到当年的心跳。然而，七年的时间改变了太多的东西，此时的辛克莱已经是债台高筑的赌徒，他来埃尔维的目的是说服贝利太太卖掉埃尔维的狩猎场。令简疑惑的是外婆的律师戴维，他对埃尔维表现出了异乎寻常的关心。辛克莱没有实现预期的目的，情急之下，他决定向简求婚，女友特萨知道后绝望地自杀了，不久，辛克莱也在懊悔中遭遇车祸。在经历了一系列的变故后，简又从戴维那里听到了意外的故事……
